Art therapy isn’t just about creating a beautiful piece of art (though, who doesn’t love a stunning masterpiece?). It’s a therapeutic technique rooted in the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Imagine expressing your feelings not just in words, but in vibrant colors, shapes, and forms. That’s the heart of art therapy!

The Magic: How Does Art Therapy Work?

  1. Breaking the Ice with Creativity Picture this: you sit down feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. Your mind is clouded with angst.   You look over and see a brush, and suddenly, the pressure to "find the right words" dissolves. Instead, you let your hands do the talking. The act of creating art becomes a bridge between your emotions and your expression, making it easier to communicate those tricky feelings.

  2. Stress Relief in Every Photo Stress and anxiety? Meet your match! Engaging in art therapy allows you to focus (pun intended) on the act of creation, which can be incredibly meditative. It’s like your very own zen garden, but with more colors and maybe a little bit of math! By immersing yourself in the process, you find a calm space within, reducing stress and bringing peace to your mind.

  3. Unleashing the Inner Child Remember how creating with Playdo was as a kid? Art therapy taps into that joyous, uninhibited part of you. Real Stories, Real Impact

At TWO BLACK RAVENS FOUNDATION, we’ve seen firsthand how art therapy can transform lives. 

My own journey began after being forced to retire from the military due to injuries sustained in Iraq. I was encouraged to pick up photography to occupy my days until I healed and found a new career. Without a mentor or guidance, I often found myself alone, channeling my dark thoughts and feelings through the lens.

In this solitary trek through the dense, shadowy forest of trauma, I gradually emerged on the other side, transformed. My photography evolved; my images grew vibrant and intentional. The focus shifted from past pain to the present beauty of the world. Then something remarkable happened—I looked back.

I saw other veterans at the beginning of their healing journeys, lost in the same forest I had traversed. How could I leave them there, knowing the loneliness and confusion I had once felt? I turned back, determined to rally and guide as many as I could. Their images were as dark and tormented as mine once were, their questions echoing those I had asked with no one to answer.

I recognized in them the pull to turn around towards the familiarity of hate and discontent, the same feelings of familiarity that once shielded me through multiple deployments. It became clear that my solitary path had a purpose: to help others navigate safely. My experiences, my injuries, had equipped me to lead others, to help them avoid the pitfalls.

I am not suicidal by nature—perhaps too stubborn for that—but severe depression is a constant companion of mine. Many people I once knew were not so fortunate, succumbing to the siren call of self-destruction. Recognizing this, I saw my role: to identify, to listen, to assist. To turn fellow service members and veterans towards art as a positive coping mechanism.

Since embracing photography as my Art Therapy, I have been published over 50 times, both nationally and internationally. I’ve won first place awards locally, regionally, and nationally. I even authored an article published in a photography magazine. But the greatest Art Therapy achievement has been using my work to help others see the beauty they bring into this world.

Art therapy isn’t just about creating; it’s about healing. It’s about finding light in the darkest places and sharing that light with those still wandering in the shadows.
